The Starting Point of All Achievement

What is it that you want to achieve?

Today? Tomorrow? Five years from now?

Do you believe that you will attain it?

Fully 80 percent of people working today would rather be doing something else, and 84 percent of them, by their own admission, feel that they are working below even far below, their potential.

America is a free society. All our choices are open to the individual. People can do anything, be anything, go anywhere, change any part of their lives for the better, whenever they want. It’s a choice.

Why is it then that so many people persist in their negativity and pessimism when they are free to think anything they want, whenever they want?

Why is it that so few people are living up to their potential?

DESIRE

What do you desire out of life?

Is it hard to get passionate about someone else’s desire? Unless it’s family, and friends.

When you get right down to it, you are the one that has to have the Desire and Drive to achieve whatever your goals and mission in life.

Strong desire is not wishing.

Desire to Change

Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to burn his ships and cut all sources of retreat. Only by so doing can one be sure of maintaining that state of mind known as a BURNING DESIRE TO WIN, essential to success.

Desire is always personal. The Power of Your Habits will rule the day.

Desire is the starting point of all achievement, not a hope, not a wish, but a keen pulsating desire which transcends everything. – Napoleon Hill

But desiring success with a state of mind that becomes an obsession, then planning definite ways and means to acquire success and riches, then backing those plans with persistence which does not recognize failure, will bring what you desire.

“I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.
“For Life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.
“I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have willingly paid.”
DESIRE OUTWITS MOTHER NATURE

What is the Intensity of your DESIRE?

THREE FEET FROM GOLD

One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by temporary defeat. Every person is guilty of this mistake at one time or another.

An uncle of R. U. Darby was caught by the “gold fever” in the gold-rush days in the 1850’s, and went west to DIG AND GROW RICH. He had never heard that more gold has been mined from the brains of men than has ever been taken from the earth. He staked a claim and went to work with pick and shovel. The going was hard, but his lust for gold was definite.

After weeks of labor, he was rewarded by the discovery of the shining ore. He needed machinery to bring the ore to the surface.

Quietly, he covered up the mine, retraced his footsteps to his home in Williamsburg, Maryland, told his relatives and a few neighbors of the “strike.” They got together money for the needed machinery, had it shipped. The uncle and Darby went back to work the mine.

The first car of ore was mined, and shipped to a smelter. The returns proved they had one of the richest mines in Colorado! A few more cars of that ore would clear the debts. Then would come the big killing in profits.

Down went the drills! Up went the hopes of Darby and Uncle!

Then something happened! The vein of gold ore disappeared! They had come to the end of the rainbow, and the pot of gold was no longer there! They drilled on, desperately trying to pick up the vein again—all to no avail.

Finally, they decided to QUIT.

They sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home. Some “junk” men are not as bright as others, but not this one! He called in a mining engineer to look at the mine and do a little calculating. The engineer advised that the project had failed, because the owners were not familiar with “fault lines.”

His calculations showed that the vein would be found…

JUST THREE FEET FROM WHERE THE DARBYS HAD STOPPED DRILLING!

That is exactly where it was found!

The “Junk” man took millions of dollars in ore from the mine, because he knew enough to seek expert counsel before giving up.

Before success comes in any person’s life, you are sure to meet with much temporary defeat, and, perhaps, some failure. When defeat overtakes a you, the easiest and most logical thing to do is to QUIT. That is exactly what the majority of people do.

THREE OPERATING PRINCIPLES

1. Life is Hard

It always has been and and it always will be. It’s never been different for you or me or anyone else. The good thing is that if you accept this basic truth, life somehow becomes a little easier because you don’t suffer so much from feelings of frustration and injustice.

2. Everything you are or ever will be is up to you

You are where you are today because that is where you have chosen to be. You are always free to choose your actions, or inactions, and your life today is the sum total of your choices good and bad.

If you want your future to be different, you have to make better choices.

3. Desire to Learn

My father taught me the day you stop learning is the day you die. He lived that until his last breath. You can learn anything you need to learn to become anyone you want to become, to achieve anything you want to achieve. There are few limitations and most of them are on the inside, not on the outside.

PERSISTENCE

PERSISTENCE is an essential factor in the procedure of transmuting DESIRE into its monetary equivalent. The basis of persistence is the POWER OF WILL.

Will-power and desire, when properly combined, make an irresistible pair.

Without PERSISTENCE, you will be defeated, even before you start.

With PERSISTENCE you will win.

Persistence

THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR PERSISTENCE! It cannot be supplanted by any other quality! Remember this, and it will hearten you, in the beginning, when the going may seem difficult and slow.

Those who have cultivated the HABIT of persistence seem to enjoy insurance against failure. No matter how many times they are defeated, they finally arrive up toward the top of the ladder.

Sometimes it appears that there is a hidden Guide whose duty is to test people through all sorts of discouraging experiences. Those who pick themselves up after defeat and keep on trying, arrive; and the world cries, “Bravo! I knew you could do it!” The hidden Guide lets no one enjoy great achievement without passing the PERSISTENCE TEST.

Those who can’t take it, simply do not make the grade.

Those who can “take it” are bountifully rewarded for their PERSISTENCE. They receive, as their compensation, whatever goal they are pursuing. That is not all!

They receive something infinitely more important than material compensation—the knowledge that…

“EVERY FAILURE BRINGS WITH IT THE SEED OF AN EQUIVALENT ADVANTAGE.”
