The average user’s News Feed has around 1,500 possible stories filtered through per day. One of the biggest misconceptions business owner’s have as it relates to Facebook, they thought 100% of everything they post is seen by their fans. Unfortunately not true as I discuss this in my Facebook workshops, and strategies to improve engagement.
For the past couple of years Facebook has operated an algorithm called “Edge Rank.” This was based upon three criteria.
Measures the relationship between the viewing user and the author of the story. The closer the relationship, the higher the score. Note; Affinity is one way interacting
Different types of posts carry different weights. The higher the weight, the higher the score in order of rank.
C. Plain Text Updates
How old is the post? As a post ages, it continually loses it’s value. This way your news feed would always remain fresh with recent news. Unless you choose to pin your post for 7 days.
According to Facebook, 96% of fans don’t go back to your Facebook page after initial engagement.
Facebook’s New Ranking Process (News Feed)
Facebook reiterated its oft-stated goal: to give users a “customized newspaper” highlighting the stories it assumes users will find most interesting. The process assigns each new story a score, placing the highest scoring stories at the top of the feed.
Scores are determined using a number of factors
- Relationship you have with the user who posted it
- The number of comments
- The number of shares
- The number of likes that the story has accumulated
Previously, each time a user refreshed their feed, new stories automatically moved to the top of the feed — even if they had a lower score than stories previously displayed. A change in the ranking process now enables older stories (stories that may have been posted earlier in the day but the user never actually scrolled through) to join the “new” stories at the top of your feed. Hence, the new term “Story Bumping.”

- A new algorithm that displays older stories that have not yet been read at the top of users’ News Feeds
Last Actor is:
- Facebook now tracks the last 50 interactions users had with people and Pages; these last 50 ‘actors’ get slightly higher News Feed visibility
These changes should be rolled out on mobile shortly.
Tips to Improve Edge Rank
- Keep it Short
- Be Visual – Photo Albums, Photos, Video
- Be consistent with the frequency of your posts
- Remember be Social more than you sell
- Ask questions
- Find what time works best for you and your brand to post
- Develop a daily regimen to form positive habits and consistency
